Listening Notes

Mountain Music from Kyrgyzstan
Ensemble Tengir-Too (pronounced "toe") reflects the nomadic cultures of Central Asia as they once were. During Soviet times, European musical forms and instruments became more standard. Under the Soviet system of professional folk ensembles, tuning systems were reworked to reflect European interval and scale systems. Tengir-Too attempts to break away from European models and re-establish an ancient and perhaps more authentic tradition.

Tengir-Too is unconventional in that it does not confirm to the conventional European compositional methods, mixing genres and experimenting with vocal timbres. Here, one should listen to the interplay of musical instruments. This instrumental tune (küü) is traditionally performed on the komuz, a three stringed fretless lute. In this example, we hear the interplay between different instruments, including the komuz, kyl kayak, choor, chopo choor, and sybyzgy.
